EMPLOYMENT
2004 - Present Self-Employed: Illustrator, Printmaker, Teacher, Writer
Washington DC Metropolitan Area
Since June of 2004 I have worked as a full-time illustrator and printmaker, and as a part-time teacher (in the Smithsonian Associates Program of the Smithsonian Institution). My works have been accepted in a number of national and regional juried exhibitions since 2004; they are in the permanent collections of The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Georgetown University, The National Museum of American History, The Smithsonian Institution, and The Library of Congress. I am active in the Washington Print Club and am a former president and vice president of the Washington Printmakers Gallery. I have written a number of reviews (for The Washington Print Club Quarterly and for the Journal of the Print World) of exhibitions at The National Gallery of Art and other local and regional venues.
1988 - 2004 Scientific Illustrator: National Science Resources Center
Smithsonian Institution/National Academy of Sciences
I worked for fifteen years as the in-house illustrator and designer in the Publications Division of the NSRC, principally on the Science and Technology for Children (STC) curriculum project. This was a full 24-unit elementary science curriculum, and it was followed in 1994 by a middle school project, Science and Technology Concepts for Middle Schools (STC/MS), a sequence of eight modules complemented by a Probeware Guide. In addition to illustrating two of the eight STC/MS modules, my responsibilities included supervising and coordinating the work of three free-lance illustrators. During this period I designed and illustrated a number of other publications for the NSRC, and was responsible for the design and production of displays, brochures, and other visual aspects of the outreach effort. In 2002 I was a recipient of the NSRC Distinguished Service Award, in the first year that those awards were made. During this period I also taught drawing and relief printmaking in the Smithsonian Associates studio arts program.
1984 - 1988 Self-Employed: Illustrator and Graphic Designer
Washington DC Metropolitan Area
I worked during this time in planning and production of camera-ready art for reproduction. Most of my clients were publishers of books, magazines, newspapers, and trade- and professional-association journals. The work ranged from one-color to six-color, and included design, illustration, type specification, typography, lettering and calligraphy, mechanical production, and color specification. Among my clients were The Washington Post, National Geographic Traveler magazine, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and various publications of the National Science Teachers Association. I also worked briefly at writing and editing during this period. In 1987 I began teaching part-time in the Studio Arts Program of The Smithsonian Associates.
Feb – Jun 1984 Instructor: Department of Fine Arts, Roanoke College, Salem, Virginia
I taught studio art and graphic design courses as a substitute for a faculty member who was on sabbatical leave.
1976 – 1983 Self-Employed: Illustrator, Graphic Designer, Writer
Glenwood Springs, Colorado
During this period I designed and illustrated publications of many kinds: menus, books, letterhead, calling cards, and advertising. I wrote and illustrated articles for local and regional magazines. Some of my poems were published in regional chapbooks.
1975 – 1976 Instructor: Humanities Division, Lake Tahoe Community College
South Lake Tahoe, California
As a charter member of the faculty, and the only art teacher, I designed the art curriculum and taught studio art, art history, and art appreciation courses.
1973 – 1975 Instructor: Humanities Division, Colorado Mountain College
Glenwood Springs, Colorado
I was the first full-time art instructor at this college. I designed the art curriculum and its courses, and taught design, drawing, painting, and art appreciation courses.
1968 – 1973 Instructor: Humanities Division, College of the Mainland
Texas City, Texas
As the only full-time art instructor, I designed the art curriculum, wrote syllabuses for all art courses, and taught the two-year art curriculum: drawing, figure drawing, two- and three-dimensional design, painting, and art appreciation. I also wrote the educational specifications for the art segment of a new fine arts building.

RELATED EXPERIENCE

While curating that exhibition, which opened on 30 December 2003, I participated in the selection of Clare Romano as the honoree of the 2005 Invitational; I later worked on production and publicity of that exhibit, and wrote reviews of the show for both The Washington Print Club Quarterly and the Journal of the Print World.
